About Me

Hey, I’m Shan.

I'm a seasoned product designer who’s worked on a variety of products in both SaaS and consumer-facing spaces. Having owned design at multiple startups in addition to running a profitable eCommerce business, I approach design with a keen product sense. My passion in psychology helps me deeply understand users and their motivations. As a systems-thinker, I can connect the user needs with the business and product goals and translate that into an actionable design strategy.

You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
— Atticus Finch, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

I was born in Beijing, moved to Vancouver, Canada when I was 8 and moved to Los Angeles when I was 10. As a result, I’ve always been aware of how different environments influence the way people behave and make decisions. To further my curiosity of people and cultures, I spent 4 years as a partial digital nomad and traveled to 30 countries. This strengthened my ability to quickly empathize with people who are different.

Prior to design, I was trained and licensed as a lawyer. I felt suffocated in the profession because the nature of law is rigid and adversarial. While exploring alternate career options, I asked myself this question: what would I do with my time if money did not matter? It was to work on creative projects and design things… what I’ve loved to do since I was a child. I stumbled upon UX design during a legal fellowship at Mozilla and found it so fun that it didn’t feel like a job. I subsequently transitioned into UX and it’s been the best decision I’ve made.

I’m currently not looking for new roles, but feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn. I’m always up for coffee chats about design.

Thank you for stopping by!

Shan
